I also contacted T-Mobile, and though the representative wouldn’t give specifics, they said “two to three months traveling, moving to various places throughout the year, is fine” but that the company’s plans are made for people who reside in the US, and, in its opinion, living somewhere else for a year definitely isn’t “residing in the US.” The idea for all of these companies is that they don’t want someone to come to the US, get a plan, then live somewhere else. I contacted Google Fi in 2018 because I was going to be outside of the US for three months straight, and the company said no problem. Indeed, there was no problem, it worked perfectly over three months and 12 countries. None specify what this means exactly, so it’s best to contact whatever company you’re considering and see if it’ll cover you for the time you plan to be overseas/away. One important caveat: If you’re planning really long-term travel, say a year traveling around the world, or a year stationed somewhere (on a beach in Tahiti, say), every US carrier has fine print implying that the majority of the data used has to be on your home network (in the US). We’ll discuss this option more in the What about local SIMs? section below. For the days when you need faster downloads-let’s say you want to work from the beach-you can get a 512 MB “Data Pass” 4G data pack (good for a day) for $5, or you can get a local SIM if you need faster Internet for multiple days in the same country.

That is only slightly faster than old-school dial-up speeds, so everything takes forever to load: It’s still usable for maps and email and researching destinations (albeit slowly), but video isn’t going to work. However, although you’ll have dependable data in more than 210 “countries and destinations,” that data is very slow: 2G speeds, or 128 Kbps. This plan is also relatively inexpensive compared with its competition and, in particular, their international roaming plans.

Dozens of new Android and iOS phones will work on T-Mobile, and if you already have one you’re happy with, you can probably use it. With its near-worldwide coverage and “unlimited” data even when roaming, the T-Mobile Magenta plan will likely save you money and headaches when traveling abroad.
